CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Early morning was ushered in by Finley’s arrival at the door to his office. He was accompanied by his wife and two eldest children. They had brought with them food to help the three guests inside break their fast.

Before he could knock at the door, Matthew, who had been up before light, opened it with a great show and good morning hurrah.

“Good morn to you, sir, and Mrs. Finley and your two fine children as well, Abigail and Edward,” he said grandly. “Come in; come in. Ahhh, and I see you brought us some of your wonderful victuals for us this morn: splendid!”

“Good morn to you, hermit. And it looks like it will shape up and be fine weather for tendin to the grounds, don’t ya know,” came Finley’s voluble retort.

As Mrs. Finley and her children went into the stone house, both men looked out at the beginning light dawning in the east. Neither one commented to the other about the recently replaced priory guard. He had just started his new shift and was blatantly watching them from across the road.

All of them gathered into a kitchen area where there was a large table filled with all of Finley’s implements and paperwork that helped him keep track of the priory’s land and buildings.

“Here, here,” he said somewhat apologetically, “let’s clear some of this stuff out of the way so’s you can eat the grand food Mrs. Finley prepared for you. And, I see that your granddaughter is awake and Master Scanlan as well. I trust that you had a restful sleep?”

Both young people replied that they had gotten a good rest. They thanked Finley, his wife and children for their kindness to the three of them.

After serving the food they had brought, Finley’s wife and two children left.

At the door ready to go outside, Mrs. Finley smiled warmly and said, “Blessings upon you and yours, Master Hermit.” Turning to her husband, she directed him to “be sure you collect our table settings when they’re done so we can take care of them at our home, Mr. Finley.”

“Yes, dear,” he replied. He also went to the door, opened it and loudly declared his love for all those in his family. “Pray, have a day filled with the good Lord’s blessings,” he said as he ushered them through the doorway out toward the road.

Finley reentered his office, and sat down near the hearth in which Evangel had lit a small fire to take away the damp early morning chill. He patiently waited for them to finish their morning fare.

Once their meal was eaten with great appetite and appreciation, Matthew and Finley made plans for the day. They agreed with one another that staying in Finley’s working quarters was the best place for them.

“If they wanted you gone, they would have escorted you off the grounds of the priory,” Finley informed them.

The hermit agreed with this observation. “Yes, and I think knowing where we are and what we’re doing gives them an opportunity to keep their eye on us.
